REMOTE ACCESS IN LINUX

Today I’m going to introduce something new and interesting. It’s accessing another computer on your network through the remote access. For this you should connect to a network and there should be two computers connected at least. Also you should know the IP addresses, User Names and Passwords of both the users.

HOW TO CONNECT?

  • First of all we should check whether our computer has installed the ssh server. ssh will do the connection and secure transferring between two computers. Both the computers should have installed ssh, otherwise you won’t be able to create the connection. If ssh is not installed you get the following error,

1

  • Install ssh using this command,

sudo apt-get install openssh-server

  • Then you have to know your and your friend’s IP addresses. Using this code you can find it.

2

  • After you found both the IP addresses and your friend’s username, now you can remotely access that computer.

3

  • Then it will ask for his password. If you know his password, then it’s great. Otherwise you won’t be able to go beyond this.

4

  • Now you have successfully logged into your friend’s computer.

HOW TO TRANSFER FILES?

After we successfully connected to the other computer, we can transfer data between them. It is possible to transfer files, directories from your computer to friend’s computer and vice versa.

Let’s see how to take a file from your friend’s computer.

  • First of all I’m going to create a file at his computer through the remote connection.

6

  • Above I has created I file called transfer1 at my friend’s location.
  • Now I want to take a copy to my location.
  • This is how I’m going to do it,

7

  • Now it will ask your password. The password of the destination computer.

8

  • Transfer has been completed successfully.

9

Now let’s see how to send a file to your friend’s computer.

  • I’m creating a file at my computer named as transfer.

10

  • Now I’m going to send it to friend’s computer.

11

  • Again it will ask for the password. This time it’s the source computer password. That means, again it’s your password.

12

  • Transfer has been completed successfully.

13

If you want to send multiple files at once,

  • First of all I created two files at my friend’s computer as ‘vimukthi1’, ‘vimukthi2’. Now I’m going to take copies of both files at once.

15

  • Transfer has been completed successfully.

16

Now let’s see how to send directory at once,

  • It’s the same. What added extra is only a parameter, ‘-r’. This will send the entire directory with it’s contain.

20

  • Now it’s time for the password.

21

  • Transfer has been completed successfully.

22

  • All the files has been transfered too.

23

At the end of doing all of this stuff I want to come back to my computer,

  • The command for exit the remote connection is ‘exit’.
